"My grandfather, Georges Handtschoewercker, came from Dunkirk. He was in the Merchant Navy on board the S.S. Katiola at the start of the war. He was in South America when he decided to come to England and join the Free French. He joined the Free French in London on the 20 December 1940. He served as quartermaster on board Chasseur 11 Boulogne, his service number being 13326. Raoul Aglion, a member of staff in the Foreign Office of the French National Committee, in his book The Fighting French, has highlighted the fact that the majority of the crews were Breton. This is borne out through my research which shows that the men interviewed came from Brittany and the Channel coast. If you were a fisherman or in the Merchant Navy, when you were called for National Service you were only allowed to join the Navy. This meant that the men had a Channel-orientated view of the war, feeling at one with the population of the South Coast of England; although many had lost friends or relatives at Mers El Kebir, which would have altered their view of the British. Even though many joined the Free French forces it was probably more from anti- German feelings than pro-British sentiments. A group of fishermen came in boats from Brittany and they were subsequently sent to Penzance due to the language similarities between Breton and Cornish. Aglion also found that fifteen per cent of the crews were from Alsace Lorraine. This could be due to unemployment before the war, as a career in the forces offered greater security. That such a significant proportion came from Alsace Lorraine is interesting. The Germans regarded the region to be part of Germany causing the Free French servicemen from Alsace Lorraine to be even more resentful now that the regions had been incorporated into the German Reich again. The lower age limit for joining the navy was seventeen, which was a year older than for the army. (Aglion, 1943, p176).
