Pierre Oléon (Alias Orlemont) à Delhi "Have I ever mentioned Pierre Orlemont who often stays a night or two here on his way through Delhi? He is a delightful boy. A French subject - born in Algiers. When war broke out he was in Chile. He and some friends got together sufficient funds to buy passages home to France so that they could join up. But while they were on the way home, France collapsed - and their ship was diverted to England. They landed and joined the Free French. Then Pierre seems to have got into his head an increasing prejudice against France and Frenchmen and everything French. He is obsessed with his country’s disgrace. So he has got himself attached to the R.A.F. which he adores and now he refuses even to acknowledge letters from the Free French and he returns the retaining fee which they send him from time to time. But the snag is that he cannot get any promotion in the R.A.F. until he gets promoted in the Free French Air Force - and not unnaturally the F.F.A.F. won’t promote him! So although he is the most senior officer in his R.A.F. squadron he can only wear one bar on his shoulders. However Eric Coates has entered the lists on Pierre’s behalf and the high-ups in the R.A.F. out here are sorting out what they can do for Pierre.
He is very young. In spite of that and in spite of being still the lowest form of officer life in the R.A.F., he is prepared to take up the cudgels with anyone on behalf of the R.A.F. The other night at dinner a very senior U.S. Colonel called Kohloss was cracking up the U.S. system of completely merging their air force in their army. He said that it led to better co-operation than the British system of having its Air Force as a separate Arm of the Service. This infuriated Pierre and he pitched into the American Colonel!"

Béatrice Potter le dimanche 01 mars 2026 Réponse : Ai-je déjà parlé de Pierre Orlemont, qui passe souvent une nuit ou deux ici en traversant Delhi ? C'est un garçon charmant. Sujet français, né à Alger. Quand la guerre a éclaté, il était au Chili. Avec des amis, il a réuni suffisamment d'argent pour acheter des billets d'avion pour rentrer en France et s'engager. Mais pendant le voyage, la France s'est effondrée et leur navire a été dérouté vers l'Angleterre. Ils ont débarqué et rejoint la France libre. Depuis, Pierre semble avoir développé un préjugé croissant contre la France, les Français et tout ce qui est français. Il est obsédé par la honte de son pays. Il s'est donc attaché à la RAF, qu'il adore, et refuse maintenant même d'accuser réception des lettres de la France libre et renvoie les indemnités qu'ils lui versent de temps à autre. Le problème, c'est qu'il ne peut obtenir aucune promotion dans la RAF tant qu'il n'est pas promu dans l'Armée de l'air française libre – et, sans surprise, la AFLF ne le promouvra pas ! Alors, bien qu'il soit le plus Officier supérieur de son escadron de la RAF, il ne peut porter qu'une seule barrette sur ses épaules. Cependant, Eric Coates a fait une demande en son nom et les hauts gradés de la RAF, ici présents, examinent les possibilités pour Pierre.
Il est très jeune. Malgré cela, et malgré son grade encore très bas dans la hiérarchie de la RAF, il est prêt à se battre avec quiconque pour la RAF. L'autre soir, à dîner, un colonel américain de haut rang, le colonel Kohloss, critiquait vivement le système américain d'intégration complète de l'armée de l'air à l'armée de terre. Il affirmait que cela permettait une meilleure coopération que le système britannique, où l'armée de l'air était une arme distincte. Furieux, Pierre s'en est pris au colonel américain !
